King of Pop is no more but the legend would live on. May the legendary soul rest in peace!
I loved his dance and music. He inspired me to dance. I used to enjoy watching his concert videos. My first western audio cassette I bought for myself was from his album "Dangerous". Usually, the tapes get fungus or wears out over a period of time but this was the cassette which lasted for more than five years. I was 12 year old when I bought this cassette. My cousin sister bought it first and I heard it first on her Walkman. I got so crazy listening to the songs that I too wanted the cassette immediately and later after much persuading and buttering my Uncle, got my first Sanyo Walkman. I used to listen to all the songs in Dangerous 24x7. My favorite hobby then was nothing but listen to all the songs in Dangerous on my new Sanyo Walkman. It had many songs like who is it, remember the time, in the closet, heal the world, black or white which I liked and I felt these music were far advanced than the ones in Thriller or Bad or for that matter for early 90's.
I was so happy when Mom and Aunt bought me Archies MJ Bad Poster. I used to admire that leather outfit and literally used to worship every day I get up in the morning. Had it not been for my mischievous brat kid brother Raul who damaged and scribbled some crap on my MJ poster, I would still be having it in perfect shape. I remember that day when I almost killed my younger brother had my Mom not intervened, he would have been a dead meat! lol.
Around this time, I was becoming addicted to MTV and used to wait for them to play any of the videos of Dangerous album. I remember discreetly switching on the T.V by midnight to check for MJ's videos. I used love watching the video of "who is it" which had amazing visualization for that time. I used to wait for them to play "Black or White" or "Remember the Time" so that I could dance along watching the video. I had no clue how I managed to dance but I remember giving myself into the rhythm and the music. My good old Granny used to enjoy seeing me dancing and at the same time be in awe by the moves I used to do and she cautions me that my bones might break if I dance like MJ.
I remember those beautiful NCC camping days where I suddenly was the star attraction from my school along with another kid. I used to hate this kid, until we danced together to the tunes of of Black or White. Damn, we both were impressed by each others moves and we forgot all the enmity we had while fighting for the school bus seat after school. I have never got so much of recognition in my NCC Airwing as much as I got when I danced on Black or White in the camp. We had a dance competition from other NCC cadets from other schools in the camp who were dancing to the tunes of the local Tollywood and Bollywood songs and I was the only kid who had a western music cassette with me in my luggage that too "DANGEROUS". This news started spreading like wildfire in the camp among the senior cadets that, one junior cadet has MJ's Dangerous Album with him. It didn't take much time for them to know who had the cassette. I couldn't believe the attention I was getting from the seniors cadets (especially from the women cadets) who had earlier ignored me during their unique way of interaction (ragging) with some selected junior cadets which they like. I really didn't bother whether I would win for the competition or not but I felt I made my school proud when one of the senior cadets remarked "these kids from S.G.G.S have some class!", thats all I wanted to hear and I felt my mission here in the camp was accomplished. While practicing for the competition, my Dad arrived at the camp, and he brought in some news that made me decide that I walk off the camp and meet my Grandparents in Kerala.
I used to live in apartments in Hyderabad and during festival seasons, we have a get together and the kids of the apartments show their talent. I had danced to the tune and entertained my fellow residents of the apartments I used to stay in Hyderabad, for different occasions and festivals. I didn't in my wildest dream imagined that I would after couple of years choreograph for black or white for a New Years Eve program, completely organized by me. Parents in the flats/apartments used to wait for two kids to perform. Mehga was marvelous and she used to dance good for Bollywood tunes while I used to break dance, free style and moon walk on western tracks. For the New Year event, I was completely incharge, by fellow residents demand I had to dance to almost on all the fast tracks sparing the slow tracks in the album "Dangerous"!
Music, relaxes mind, body and soul. Today, I listen to all sorts of music, currently I enjoy listening to hard rock and metal. I don't dance much these days but I can dance whenever I feel like. I don't think I would have been inclined to western music or dance had there not been the King of Pop - Micheal Jackson.
